Stress is part of life, whether it’s caused by work, personal life, or even yourself. While we can’t eliminate stress entirely, we can change how we respond to it. One of the most powerful tools for managing stress and improving overall well-being is self-care.
What is self-care planning?
Self-care planning is the process of intentionally creating a personalized strategy to maintain and improve your physical, emotional, and mental health. This process includes understanding your needs, setting meaningful goals, and building routines to help you stay grounded, energized , and resilient.
Self-care planning doesn’t have to be complicated or require a lot of work. Even small, consistent actions—like getting enough sleep, taking a walk, or setting aside time to unwind—can make a big difference.
A good self-care plan should be thoughtfully created by identifying activities or routines that support and sustain you.
4 things to consider when making your personalized plan
1. Assess your needs
Here are some key areas of life that may benefit from reflection:
- Physical health
- Am I getting enough sleep?
- Do I exercise in a way where my body feels good?
- Am I eating nutritious meals regularly?
- Emotional well-being
- How do I handle stress of difficult emotions?
- Do I feel emotionally supported?
- Am I able to express feelings in healthy ways?
- Relationships
- Do I have people that I can count on?
- Am I setting healthy boundaries?
- Work-life balance
- Do I feel overworked?
- Do I have a good work-life balance?
- Am I satisfied with the work that I do?
A check-in with yourself to evaluate your current state of well-being across different life domains is an important step in planning self-care. The goal is to understand where you feel fulfilled and where you might be struggling.
2. Choose activities that nourish you
What activities do you enjoy? Which ones will bring about the best results? Some simple, yet great examples include:
- Exercise, at home, in a local park, or at the gym
- Make healthy, nutritious, and tasty meals
- Support your physical health by talking to specialists about any concerns
- Spend time with your partner, friends, and family
- Practice meditation or breathing exercises
- Get out into nature, especially if you spend most of your waking hours indoors
- Enjoy some leisure time, such as watching a film, reading a book, or playing a game
- Pamper yourself with a long bath, a facial, or a massage
- Set yourself up for a good night's sleep – shoot for 7-8 hours minimum
- Listen to music or podcasts that improve your mood or inspire you
- Plan time off work – either to go away, or enjoy time at home to relax and unwind
- Try a new creative activity, such as writing a journal, morning pages, painting, or sewing
3.Set realistic goals
Changing old habits that you have practiced for a lifetime won’t happen overnight. Set yourself up for success by creating realistic goals and making small changes over time.
Start with a long bath or practice simple breathing exercises before bed. Getting into the habit of making time for yourself and your self-care, no matter how 'small' the activity, is a great first step.
You can also block off your calendar with achievable goals such as:
- Saturday: Find a couple of new healthy recipes to try for dinner next week
- Sunday: Go for a morning walk with a friend.
4. Reflect and seek support
There are bound to be things that cause you to feel overwhelmed, whether it’s life or work. It’s important to understand how to cope with stress.
Identify a support system to know who you can call if you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or sad. Knowing who or what you can lean on in times of need will make it a lot easier to manage your emotional, mental, and physical health.
Lastly, be sure to keep track your activities, goals, and progress to see where you've done well, and where you struggled. Celebrate your wins and don’t beat yourself up for missing a goal, simply move it to next week or think of another time you might be able to achieve it.
