Rhyming Steps

Dad holding baby's hand while going down the stairs

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to demonstrate phonological awareness

Materials Needed:

  • None

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. As you’re climbing steps with your child, make a game of trying to think of as many words that rhyme as there are stairs. (E.g. hop, pop, stop mop.)
  2. Say a new word as you move to a new step.

Learn More: Don’t have stairs or steps? Lay pieces of tape on the floor and say a rhyming word as your child hops from one piece of tape to another.
