I partnered with the City Colleges of Chicago to recruit students to our BA programs. After six years of recruiting, I started my advising journey at Texas A&M San Antonio where I worked in the counseling department as a graduate advisor. I assisted students pursuing counseling and school administration degrees and certificates. I later moved to Houston where I worked as a health advisor at the University of Houston in the College of Education. From there, I joined the Houston Community College team of Pathway Advisors. I was the team lead to help create our Transfer Center at our central location. Students could come and receive transfer information from our university partners and attend transfer fairs and workshops.
My coaching style and approach are one of collaboration. Gathering information, asking the right questions, and listening are key skills for any advisor. As an adult learner, I understand the need to be heard and receive information and support for my higher education goals. Deciding to go back to school can be a huge decision, determining the right time, financial obligations, family commitments, schedule, etc., all play a role in this decision. As a coach, I keep these things in mind as I work with learners to help them achieve their academic goals.
