Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concern for parents. From late elementary school through college, many students are quietly using tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to complete assignments, study for tests, and even manage their workload.
With the right guidance, AI in education can enhance curiosity, reinforce understanding, and build confidence. Without guidance, it can just as easily weaken critical thinking, reduce resilience, and replace meaningful effort.
For parents, the goal isn’t to control every use of AI. Instead, stay engaged, ask thoughtful questions, and help children develop the judgment to use these tools wisely.
It’s important to understand how students are using AI for school, where it supports learning, where it can get in the way, and how you can guide your child to use it responsibly.
How does AI support learning?
AI can be a powerful academic tool when it’s used to support thinking rather than replace it. When used thoughtfully, there can be many benefits of AI in education. AI is always available, quick to respond, and able to explain concepts in multiple ways. For students who feel stuck or overwhelmed, that kind of support can be valuable.
Common examples of what a student can ask AI for:
- Having concepts explained more simply
- Generating practice questions before a test
- Getting feedback on essay drafts
In these examples, children are still engaging with the material, thinking critically, and building skills.
AI can also be used as a productivity tool, especially for older students in high school or college. If they’ve already mastered a skill, like structuring an essay or analyzing data, AI can help them work more efficiently without taking away the learning.
Can AI hurt the learning process?
The biggest concern with AI and student learning is the quiet loss of learning that happens when students skip the struggle.
Real learning requires effort and involves trying something new, getting it wrong, and working through confusion. That process builds critical thinking skills, problem-solving ability, and resilience.
AI makes it incredibly easy to bypass all of that. A student can ask for:
- A full essay instead of writing one
- A solution to a math problem they haven't attempted
- A summary of a book they were supposed to read
The work gets done—but the learning doesn’t happen.
This is especially important for younger students or those encountering material for the first time. If they rely on AI too early, they never develop the foundational skills needed later.
What are some risks of AI in education?
While academic misuse is a concern, some of the most important risks of AI in education are less obvious.
- Confident misinformation. AI tools can give incorrect answers while sounding completely certain. Because they’re often right, students can begin to trust them too much and stop questioning what they’re told.
- Bias. AI reflects patterns in human language, which means it can carry subtle biases in how it describes people, ideas, and perspectives. Without guidance, students may not recognize this.
- Privacy. Many students don’t think twice about entering personal details into AI tools. But anything shared can potentially be stored, reused, or exposed. Teaching kids to avoid sharing personal information is critical.
- AI “Companion”. Some students are talking to their AI bots like a friend. Because these tools are designed to sound human and responsive, they can feel comforting, especially for kids experiencing loneliness or stress.
AI doesn’t truly understand, empathize, or act in a child’s best interest. Overreliance on it for emotional support can interfere with real relationships and, in extreme cases, contribute to harmful thinking patterns. This is an area where parent awareness and open conversations are especially important.
How to guide healthy AI use
Like most technology, the goal with AI is guidance, not elimination. Here's how to start:
Step 1: Build Awareness
Many parents don’t realize how frequently their child is using AI. Asking questions like “How often do you use it for school?” can open the door to better understanding.
Step 2: Explore together
As part of guiding AI use at home, ask questions, test its accuracy, and notice where it’s helpful — and where it falls short. You don’t need to be an expert at AI; being present is what matters.
It’s also helpful to encourage a simple habit: do the work first. Before turning to AI, tell your child to attempt the problem, read the material, or start the assignment on their own. Teach them that AI should come in as support after effort, especially when it comes to how students use AI for schoolwork.
Many families also find it useful to talk through when AI use is appropriate. A simple mental framework can help guide conversations about parents and AI in education:
- Green light: studying, getting explanations, practicing skills
- Yellow light: summarizing or assisting, depending on the assignment
- Red light: submitting AI work as their own or skipping learning entirely
A great reminder for your child:
If you wouldn’t feel comfortable telling your teacher how you used AI, it’s probably not the right use.
Step 3: Teach verification
Encourage your child to compare AI answers with trusted sources, ask follow-up questions, and consider whether the response makes sense.
The most important skill your child can build in an AI-driven world isn’t how to use the technology; it’s knowing when not to rely on it.
