This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to explore the textures, shapes, and characteristics of natural materials. These types of experiences allow children to focus, ask questions, try out a variety of ideas, and solve problems.
- Smooth stones or sticks
- Ribbons or other household materials
Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.
- Offer the stones, sticks, and other materials to your child. Say, “What could we build with these?”
- Demonstrate a few possibilities, such as laying the stones out in a spiral, straight line, or path. Perhaps you could stack some of the stones to make a tower.
- Let your child explore and work with the materials; add other items to sustain interest.
