This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to explore the sensations of rain, wind, and snow while discussing the weather associated with these sensory inputs.
Materials Needed:
- Waiting (Click Here) by Kevin Henkes
- Water
- Ice cubes
- Shallow bowls
- A fan
Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.
Directions:
- Read Waiting by Keven Henkes or watch him read it aloud at the HarperKids website. Ask your child, what kind of weather was in the book? How does the weather from the story match what is happening outside our home today?
- Offer your child a table with two shallow bowls, one with warm water and one with ice. Turn on the fan. Ask your child to touch the rain (water), snow (ice), and feel the wind (fan) and label how they feel, e.g., cold, wet, windy, warm, chilly.
- Talk about how certain types of weather can happen together or separately, e.g., a rainy, windy day or a snowy, windy day. Ask, how do these sensory elements match what we might feel the weather doing outside our home today?
