Texture Bags

Cotton balls and sponges in plastic bags creating different textures for children to explore at home

Learning Value:

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to use their senses to explore and interact with the environment.

Materials Needed:

  • Gallon zip-top freezer bags (3)
  • Masking tape or duct tape
  • Straws (10)
  • Cotton balls
  • Sponges (2)

Participants:

This activity is intended for child/adult interaction and requires direct adult supervision with the use of the bags.

Directions:

  1. Make different texture bags with the items listed below:
    1. Straws: Lay the straws side-by-side in the bag.
    2. Cotton balls: Put enough cotton balls in the bag to give it some cushion.
    3. Sponges: Cut up sponges into small squares.
  2. Place the bags side by side on the floor and tape the top and bottom of each bag to the floor.
  3. Lay your baby on their tummy to touch and explore the different bags. Offer some vocabulary-building words such as hard, soft, and squishy.
