This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to make observations about the world around them. Children will notice and document plants and animals in their neighborhood and learn about their food and shelter.
Materials Needed:
- Binoculars
- Masking tape
- Toilet paper rolls
- Clipboards
- A writing implement
Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.
Directions:
- Show the children the real binoculars and how they help people observe nature. Then challenge your child to make their own binoculars using the toilet paper rolls and masking tape.
- Take your child on a walk to observe plants and animals in your neighborhood. Give your child a clipboard with paper and ask your child to draw what they observe.
- Make a list together of the plants and animals that you saw on your walk. Ask, where do the animals have shelter? Where do the animals get food? Where do the plants get food? Why are homes so important?
