Going on a Picnic Memory Game

Large picnic basket outside of day care used for memory game

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to listen to, understand, and respond to communication from others.

Materials Needed:

  • None

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  • Step 1: Explain the rules of the game. Each player starts a sentence with the phrase, “It’s a warm summer day and we’re going on a picnic. Let’s take…”
  • Step 2: The first player thinks of one food to take. Each subsequent player must include the previously listed foods and add one additional item. Soon you’ll have a long list to remember and repeat, e.g., watermelon, chicken, spaghetti, tofu, tacos. Feel free to include a few nonsensical foods.
  • Step 3: The game ends when one player forgets a food.
