Build a Birds Nest

An easy to make birds nest made from items around the house

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to use their imaginations to create a pretend home for a bird and its eggs. Children will use fine motor skills to weave materials together and then extend their STEM skills to estimate how big the bird’s eggs may be.

Materials Needed:

  • Paper
  • Ribbon or yarn
  • Sticks
  • Paper bowl
  • Play dough or plastic eggs

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. Using the paper bowl as a base, ask your child to use ribbons, strips of paper, or sticks and weave them together to create a comfortable and cozy pretend bird’s nest.
  2. Create 2-3 pretend bird’s eggs from play dough, or use plastic eggs. Challenge your child to carefully place the egg in the nest and test if the woven materials safely hold the egg without touching the sides of the bowl.
  3. Ask, how do birds weave their nests? What makes a nest a good habitat for a bird? How might you weave if you did not have hands?
