Story Stretchers

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to demonstrate the use of creativity and imagination in learning and play. In this activity, one family member will offer a story prompt. Each family member adds to the story, stretching it out as long as possible. Try this activity over a family dinner or while in the car.

Materials Needed:

  • None

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. Offer a story prompt, such as, “Once a family lived in a tiny house in the woods. They were very happy, but one day a giant…”
  2. Ask another family member to continue the story, adding more detail and ending at a critical point.
  3. Continue adding to the story, making it as farfetched, silly, or exciting as you like.
