My Neighborhood Numbers

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to learn and practice numerical recognition, counting, and sorting.

Materials Needed:

  • None

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. While out on a neighborhood walk, point out and name all the numbers you see to your infant or toddler. Challenge older children to spot numbers on their own, such as on street signs, building numbers, license plates, or mailboxes.
  2. Count the number of windows on the front of a house. Count the steps up to your front door.
  3. Ask: does that car look bigger or smaller than that truck? Which house/building is taller? How many blue cars are parked on this street?
