Materials Needed:

  • 2 Cups flour
  • ½ tsp. Baking powder
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • 2/3 cup Shortening
  • 2 Eggs
  • ¾ c. Birdseed
  • Paper clip
  • Ribbon or string

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. Help your child measure and pour the flour, baking powder, and sugar in a bowl. Stir or mix in the shortening and eggs. Add the birdseed.
  2. Roll the dough into balls. Help your child flatten the balls into round cookies. Use a paper clip or wood skewer (adults only) to make a hole in the top of the cookies.
  3. Bake the cookies at 325˚ Fahrenheit on an ungreased cookie sheet for 10 to 15 minutes, or until hard. Allow the cookies to cool. Thread pieces of ribbon through the holes in the cookies and hang them outdoors for the birds.
