Stuck at home on a rainy day? Try a letter hunt! This activity can easily be done in your house and it's a great way to encourage letter recognition.
What You Need
- 26 square pieces of paper (each inscribed with a different letter of the alphabet)
- Tape
How to Do this Activity
Tape letters in different places in the house (walls, doors, windows, chairs, etc.), and, for more of a challenge, don’t let your child see where you hide them. Once you’re done, call out a letter and ask your child to walk through the house to find it. And if you have more than one child, let them take turns. After your child finds the letter, have her bring it back to you. Repeat with different letters for as long as you can! Say the sound of each letter and perhaps, use the letters to form words. Or find objects in your home that correspond with each letter, e.g., a sock for the letter "s."
What Your Child Learns
Through this activity, children begin to understand that letters make sounds that can be used to form words. They begin to recognize letters of the alphabet. Additionally, this activity builds listening, focus, and problem solving.
