What You Need

  • Magazines or photos
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks or glue
  • Paintbrushes

How to Do this Activity

Go through magazines together or find duplicate photos you have lying around the house. Encourage your child to find people’s faces and cut them out. Give your child time to voice his reactions. Then, respond and respectfully acknowledge physical differences. Ask your child what he’s thinking as he looks at the variety of faces and help him notice skin tones, glasses, hair, and more. Point out the people's facial expressions.

What Your Child Learns

Through this activity, children gain awareness of the facial differences and similarities. They begin to see the beauty and variety of human beings. Children also learn to read and interpret facial expressions, an important aspect of social-emotional development.
