Calming Space

A fort made by kids to use at home

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to manage actions and behaviors and express, understand, and regulate emotions

Materials Needed:

  • Twinkle lights or other soft light
  • Big pillows
  • Soft blankets
  • Books
  • Lava timers

Participants: This activity is intended for independent use.


  1. Talk about what a habitat is for animals. Ask, what do they need in their habitat?
  2. Brainstorm with your child what they want or need to create a calming habitat.
  3. Locate a space in your home where you and your child can build your calming area. Use soft materials, pillows, and blankets, and add in materials that are soothing. Soft lights or twinkly lights, favorite books, lava timers or sensory bottles (see previous WAH activity to create sensory bottles CLICK HERE ), and add calming music or nature sounds.
