5 Little Ducks

A little duck sock poppet for play at home

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to demonstrate phonological awareness.

Materials Needed:

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. Learn the song “5 Little Ducks.” Place a sock over your hand to use as a sock puppet for the mother duck in the song. If you like, you can draw eyes on it, or even glue a bit of orange felt or construction paper to it for a beak.
  2. Sing the song to your baby. Use exaggerated actions, facial expressions, and voice to keep your baby’s interest. Hearing and singing nursery rhymes and songs builds children’s vocabulary and phonemic awareness.
  3. Look at images of ducks with your child or see ducks in nature if possible.
