Positive & Proactive Parenting Solutions - Family Matters Bright Horizons Webinar Series

Setting expectations for children and disciplining can be two very tough challenges for many parents, especially during the back-to-school season. In fact, a study by Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University, reveals that one in three parents experience difficulty when it comes to disciplining their children.

Amy McCready, founder of Positive Parenting Solutions and a Today Show Mom contributor, recently joined Ruth Fidino for the Bright Horizons Family Matters webinar that focused on positive and proactive parenting solutions. More than 2,000 working parents found a community in the live webinar to participate in a frank conversation about struggle to remain positive in the face of all the stresses of work and home life.

"As a recovering yeller, I understand how and why many parents struggle when it comes to disciplining their children," said McCready. "This webinar helped to arm parents with simple techniques that get them to out of the nagging, reminding and yelling business, and into a more proactive parenting mode."

Pillars for positive parenting can include:

  • Attention and power baskets. Children have a built-in, hard-wired, non-negotiable need for belonging, significance, attentions and emotional connection. Parents need to assess whether they are consistently fulfilling their child’s attention and power basket needs in positive ways.
  • Mind, body and soul time. Time that parents can carve out to emotionally connect with their child in deep, fulfilling, and genuine ways is critical.
  • Fair and effective consequences. This third pillar provides support to parents, when they need it most. It allows parents to dispense reasonable and fair consequences when their child is not meeting expectations for behavior and cooperation, but only as a last resort.

***The Family Matters webinar series is committed to providing information about all aspects of family life. The next  webinar will be held on October 29, 2014 at 2 PM Eastern and will  feature speakers from AARP to talk about Medicare---what you need to know about if you are a caregiver for your parents, grandparents, or other older loved ones.
