As an undergraduate English major, I pursued a job in publishing after graduation as it seemed the logical thing to do. I worked for a year or so as an administrative/editorial assistant for a fly-fishing magazine. One cold winter day, I found myself standing in a stream in a leaky pair of waders and came to the realization the job was not a good fit for me. I knew I needed a change.

The first thing that came to mind was to look for positions at colleges or universities since my undergraduate experience was positive and rewarding thanks to the staff who supported me.

My first job in higher education was as an administrative assistant in the Office of Advising and Enrollment Services at the University of Southern Maine, Portland campus. I supported 10+ academic advisors and also processed registrations and transcript requests. I enjoyed the blend of advising and student records and was especially drawn to transfer student coaching and credit evaluation. My tenure in subsequent positions as Assistant and Associate Registrar at two small colleges in Massachusetts allowed me to work closely with students to ensure maximization of transfer credits and to guide them to timely degree completion.

I was drawn to the academic coaching role at EdAssist by Bright Horizons because it allows me to utilize my experience in higher education while focusing specifically on the adult learner.

As a proponent of lifelong learning, it is rewarding to play a part, no matter how big or small, in an employee’s pursuit of new skills or knowledge. There is nothing more motivating and fulfilling than a thank you email from someone I advise after they complete a course or earn a degree or professional certification. Their sense of pride is contagious and inspires me every day to do what I do.
