The transition to summer often brings a mix of anticipation and the pragmatic realization that keeping young children entertained for weeks on end takes planning—and a stash of engaging activities. Rather than giving into endless screen time or the same indoor routines, let’s embrace the season as an opportunity for exploration, sensory engagement, and memory-making.
This summer, our bucket list is all about experiences that are both developmentally enriching and realistically doable with toddlers in tow.

10 ideas for your family's summer bucket list

  1. Water play beyond bath time: we’re all bathing our sweaty toddlers at least once a day in the summer. With hotter days, summer allows us to expand our horizons. Make it special by letting your toddler “paint” on outdoor surfaces with water. Add chalk or washable paint for a colorful twist.
  2. Local outdoor concerts or performances: search for family-friendly music events or even puppet shows in your area to give your toddler a whole new outdoor entertainment experience. No events nearby? Put on your own family “puppet show” or “concert” in your backyard with stuffed animals and instruments.
  3. Farm animal encounters: head to your local farm or petting zoo to allow for some gentle interaction with animals Practice naming the animals, mimic their sounds, or feed them (if allowed). It’s a sensory-rich experience toddlers love.
  4. Scenic trails or trolley rides: look for heritage railways or trolley lines offering short rides with engaging scenery. The movement and changing views are often mesmerizing for little ones.
  5. New playground adventures: introduce your toddler to a new playground. A fresh environment can spark excitement and new kinds of play.
  6. “Yes Day” toddler edition: within safe limits, let your toddlers make the decisions for a set period. They’ll love the independence and being the “leader” for a couple of hours (choosing their own snacks, activities or outfits).
  7. Indoor or outdoor forts: create a cozy hideaway with blankets and pillows for imaginative play. Once you’ve created your castle, add books, snacks and games for extra fun.
  8. Time capsule: capture a snapshot of the fleeting toddler stage by creating a time capsule. Gather small items from the summer, whether it’s their favorite toy, a piece of artwork, a favorite book, photos from recent vacations, a tiny shoe or sock, and even or a letter written from your toddler’s perspective (with your help). Open it together in a few years!
  9. Homemade popsicles: try this fun kitchen activity that doubles as a refreshing treat. Experiment with fruit purees and their favorite yogurt pop it in the freezer and enjoy it on the sweltering summer days.
  10. Plant a seed together: even a small pot with a bean seed can be a fascinating learning experience. Water it daily and watch it grow – an easy way to introduce patience and care.

By approaching summer with a bit of intention and creativity, we can turn ordinary days into meaningful memories. While the pace may be set by tiny feet and short attention spans, the joy of shared experiences will make this season one to remember.
