Metal Bowl Exploration

Large bowls and other toys used at Bright Horizons day care

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to understand and use a growing vocabulary

Materials Needed:

  • Shiny metal bowls or similar objects
  • Blanket

Participants: This activity is intended for independent play and child-adult interaction.

Directions:

Step 1: Place your baby on her tummy on a blanket or other soft, safe place on the floor.

Step 2: Set the bowls down in front of her so she can see herself in them. She can touch, explore, or even bang on the bowls.

Step 3: Talk with your child about what she’s doing, for example, “Look, I can see you! The bowl is shiny. You’re tapping the bowl.”

Learn More: Try adding an object, such as a plastic spoon, soft fabric swatch, or smooth piece of wood, to increase your child’s engagement.
