Learning at Home: Recording the World Activity

Preschool girl with headphones

This is an activity you can do whenever you and your child have spare time and the ability to go outside.

What You Need

  • A digital device with a voice recording app

How to Do this Activity

Take a walk with your child, press “Record” on the device, and listen for different sounds as you go (guide your child on different routes that you know might offer different sounds — birds chirping, cars driving by, dogs barking, and more). Later in the day, listen to the recording together, and ask your child to try and identify the sounds.

What Your Child Learns

This activity sparks an awareness of the world of sound. As you listen to the sounds later, your child must focus, reflect, and identify the sounds.
