What You Need

  • Sponges
  • Scissors
  • Bathtub (or containers)full of water

How to Do this Activity

Start by cutting sponges into different shapes. Give the sponges to your child to play with in the water. Let him experiment with the sponges. After a while, ask open-ended questions, such as, “What happens when you squeeze the sponge?” or “How are sponges different when they’re wet?”

What Your Child Learns

Through this activity, children begin to understand concepts like wet, dry, full, and empty. Children learn that sponges can absorb water and that the water can be released by squeezing the sponge. Children use observation and trial and error to explore the properties of sponges.
