Bright Horizons' CFO Talks Success for Women on FORTUNE

How do you excel in a male-dominated industry? That's the question our own Bright Horizons CFO Elizabeth Boland recently answered on FORTUNE's MPW Insider's Network. Elizabeth would know. The CFO has excelled since her undergrad days at Notre Dame put her in a student body with a seven-to-one male-to-female ratio. Later, she was one of the small percentage of  women at Price Waterhouse. "I'm used to being in the minority," she wrote, "and have learned a few things along the way to make sure my voice is heard in a sea of men."

Demanding Attention in a Room Full of Men

The MPW Insiders Network is where "the biggest names in business and beyond answer timely career and leadership questions." Elizabeth wrote about being bold, finding a mentor, demanding attention, and being unafraid to speak up. "Men certainly aren't shy about saying what's on their minds and we shouldn't be either," she wrote. "Rather than waiting until you've reviewed all of the information to offer up your voice, take a cue from men and throw out your opinion."

"Stay True to Yourself"

Elizabeth herself admits to occasionally downplaying her achievements to avoid "sounding like she's bragging." But by leading that way, she asks, "...what kind of messages are we sending to younger professionalswomen as well as menabout confident leadership?" At the end of the day, she says, the key to success is the same for both men and women. Don't be afraid to exude confidence, showcase your strengths, offer strong opinions, and stay true to yourself."
