Like many new moms, Denise Henderson took control of her baby’s mealtime by making her own organic baby food. Henderson initially began making her own food because one of her twins had food allergies. Using only organic fruits, vegetables and grains, she made all of her purees from just one ingredient to ensure she was introducing ingredients to her baby one at a time, and organized the foods into four color-coded groups. She also only made Super Foods or foods high in nutrients and antioxidants: Orange packs for Super Vitamin A foods, Red packs for Super Vitamin C foods, Green packs for Super Greens and Purple packs for Gluten-free Cereals (Square One calls it Porridge).
Denise soon realized the food solution she used was just what busy moms everywhere were looking for; simple, affordable and pure organic super foods. The serving size is designed to match baby’s appetite and reduce waste while promoting a balanced diet. Easy to prepare, Square One can be defrosted overnight in the refrigerator severed chilled, warmed from frozen in the microwave after being transferred to a glass dish or warmed up in a pan on the stove. “It’s nice to have a choice about food preparation, since all of purees are cooked first they are entirely safe to eat right out of the refrigerator” said Henderson.
Henderson hired a registered pediatric dietitian and food scientist and began to produce Square One® Frozen Organic Super Foods for Babies. The product is now available in grocers’ freezers throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area. As part of their marketing and sales strategy, Denise approached the Chicago area Bright Horizons child care centers to see if Bright Horizons’ parents would be interested in buying her product directly. Currently, parents at many local centers order Square One® Frozen Organic Super Foods for Babies at their centers and Denise delivers the product to the center for the parents to take home.
The company also offers parents online Food Journals which give guidelines on food introduction and tracks recommended serving sizes, sleeping habits, and formula or breast milk intake among other things. Also available online is the Square One Super food Guide. This is a color coded guide of the Super Foods Square One offers , as well as, other Super foods from our four color coded categories. It is a great tool for grocery shopping. The journals and the Super food Guide can be found at: http://www.squareoneorganics.com/
Because of Bright Horizons commitment to Supplier Diversity, we asked Denise if she would consider going through the process of becoming a “certified” woman-owned business. We are happy to report that Denise accepted the challenge and is now officially certified. We welcome her to our family of certified diversity suppliers and are looking forward to growing our relationship.
