Horizons for Homeless Children (HHC), located in Boston, Massachusetts, is a national leader in advocating for homeless children and their families. HHC touches the lives of more than 2,000 homeless children each week in Massachusetts through Playspaces (educational and recreational spaces) in shelters, and 175 children each week through its three Community Children's Centers, Boston's only comprehensive, full-time early education and child care centers specifically for homeless children. Horizons for Homeless Children help children learn how to play, to share, to read, and to enjoy exploring their worlds, and help to stabilize families, and help to break the cycle of homelessness. They provide training and technical assistance for our national Bright Space program, and we partner with them on all Bright Spaces that are opened in homeless shelters in Massachusetts.
City Year's mission is to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership and social entrepreneurship. An "action tank" for national service, City Year seeks to demonstrate, improve and promote the concept of national service as a means for building a stronger democracy. In 2005, we partnered with City Year to create three Bright Spaces as a part of a Community Builders Tour sponsored by Timberland Corporation.
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national nonprofit organization that promotes early pediatric literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation. Bright Horizons Foundation for Children holds book drives that collects over 400 books each year for this program.
The Pajama Program provides warm pajamas and books to needy children in the United States and around the world. Bright Horizons Foundation for Children partners with the Pajama Program to provide books and PJs to children residing in our shelter partners.
Mercy Corps works amid disasters, conflicts, chronic poverty and instability. Bright Horizons Foundation for Children has partnered with Mercy Corps to provide resources to families and children after the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11th and after Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast area.
Save the Children is the leading independent organization that creates real and lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world. It is a member of the International Save the Children Alliance, comprising 27 national Save the Children organizations working in more than 110 countries to ensure the well-being of children. Bright Horizons Foundation for Children partners with Save the Children in on-going work.
Dan Zanes and Friends: Dan Zanes, popular children's artist and Grammy-nominated musician, raised over $60,000 through benefit concerts for the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children. The Bright Spaces 2 - Family Music to Benefit Children in Crisis CD was personally compiled by Dan and is a diverse collection of music including a sea shanty, a Jewish wedding poem, a West Indian waltz, 40s pop standards, spirituals, and rock and roll. All net proceeds benefit the Foundation's programs that aid children and families in distress.
